OHB DC is building a new UHF control station for the German Armed Forces’ satellite communications
Bremen/Kastellaun, February 7, 2024. OHB Digital Connect GmbH , a subsidiary of the aerospace and technology group OHB SE, has been commissioned by the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology, and Use of the German Armed Forces (BAAINBw) in Koblenz to refurbish the UHF-DAMA control station in Kastellaun. The abbreviation UHF stands for “Ultra High Frequency” and refers to electromagnetic waves in the frequency band ranging from approximately 300 megahertz to 3 gigahertz. DAMA stands for “Demand Assigned Multiple Access.” This is a technology for the temporary, demand-based assignment of communication channels to various users. The UHF control station in Kastellaun is part of SATCOMBw, the Bundeswehr’s satellite-based communications system, and serves as a key resource for UHF troop communications.
As part of the contract awarded to OHB, the existing control station will be replaced by a new facility that will be significantly more capable. “We are pleased that, following the completion of the UHF control station in Gerolstein, we now have the opportunity to once again contribute our SatCom expertise to the project in Kastellaun,” says Wilfried Wetjen, Head of the Communications Systems Division at OHB DC. The UHF-DAMA control station ensures the availability of communications via secure, satellite-based radio systems. This contract covers the turnkey construction of the ground station for satellite communications and the integration of the control station into the German Armed Forces’ networks.
