OHB Digital Connect hands over new UHF control station for satellite communications to the Bundeswehr
Bremen/Kastellaun, October 28, 2025. Successful project completion on time, within budget, and with high quality: Three days before the contractually agreed project end, Dr. Dieter Birreck, Managing Director of OHB Digital Connect, was able to hand over the symbolic key to the new UHF DAMA control station Kastellaun at the Hunsrück barracks to the project manager for SATCOMBw Stage 2 and Stage 3 of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) and the Bundeswehr IT Services Command (KdoIT-SBw). The station serves the satellite communications of the Bundeswehr and was put through its paces several times before the handover to ensure that all requirements demanded by the client, BAAINBw, were met.
The new building replaces the previous control station with significantly more powerful technology and provides capacities for Bundeswehr communications via secure, satellite-based radio systems. “We are proud that we were able to realize the new UHF DAMA control station in Kastellaun within the estimated budget and that the handover can now take place three days before the end of the project term,” said Dr. Birreck during his visit to Kastellaun. “This once again proves our expertise in the field of satellite communications.“
The contract included the turnkey construction of the ground station and the connection to the Bundeswehr networks. A comparable project was already successfully completed in 2019 with the construction of a new UHF DAMA control station for the Gerolstein site.
The abbreviation UHF stands for “Ultra High Frequency” and refers to electromagnetic waves in the frequency band from approximately 300 megahertz to 3 gigahertz. DAMA stands for “Demand Assigned Multiple Access.” This is a technology that enables flexible and efficient allocation of transmission and reception channels to different users, so that the available bandwidth is used optimally and communication works securely and reliably even in remote areas of operation. The UHF DAMA control station Kastellaun is part of SATCOMBw, the satellite-based communication system of the Bundeswehr, and a central resource in UHF tactical communications.
