Satellite Ground Segments

OHB Digital Connect has extensive and long-standing experience in the development of customized satellite ground segments for a wide range of satellite systems.

The ground systems we realize are developed in close cooperation with our customers. We derive a modular architecture for all relevant system elements from the specific requirements for the ground segment and the utilization concept for the overall system. This allows our ground segments to be used flexibly and they can easily be adapted to new requirements during their service life. Redundancies in important system components and a scalable structure ensure a high data throughput and high reliability. We are also able to equip our systems with a high degree of automation at the customer's request. This allows us to reduce the number of personnel required for satellite control.

In addition to operational ground systems, OHB Digital Connect also develops simulators for testing and training purposes. By training users in all system functions, we enable them to make optimum use of all system components.

We are also active in research and development for the expansion of capabilities relevant for the future. This includes a system for automated contact establishment and optimization in terms of availability, bandwidth and performance for a cluster of satellite and ground networks. The aim is to provide stable, location-independent communication without user intervention.

In addition to the expertise available at OHB Digital Connect, our customers have access to the know-how of the entire OHB Group - for example in the development of technology for SAR processors.

Ground systems for Earth observation and telecommunications missions

As part of various Earth observation and telecommunications missions, we have developed individually designed ground systems with high safety standards for a wide range of clients.

Examples of projects we have implemented include the ground segments for the SAR-Lupe and SARah reconnaissance missions, as well as the development and integration of the ground segment for the "Europeanization of Satellite Based Reconnaissance"(E-SGA) program. This offers the possibility of connecting European partners to the SAR-Lupe system and enabling them to commission their own radar data. In this context, we also set up the F-SLGS (French SAR-Lupe Ground Segment) for our partner France.

Ground systems for satellites with electric propulsion

For the Electra platform developed by our sister company OHB System, we have developed a ground segment specially tailored to the requirements of a satellite with purely electric propulsion. The longer transfer phase compared to conventional chemical propulsion entails special requirements. Foresighted planning of satellite movements and collision avoidance are among the core elements, as classic evasive maneuvers are not possible.

Multi-Mission Control Center

We have also set up our own pioneering Multi-Mission Control Center (MMCC ) at the Bremen site, which is designed for the simultaneous operation of several missions and offers the possibility of highly flexible adaptations to specific mission requirements. The MMCC can be used to control, monitor and support satellite and other space missions of all kinds and in a wide variety of phases.
