OHB Digital Connect hands over new UHF control station for satellite communications to the German Armed Forces
Bremen/Kastellaun, October 28, 2025 - Successful project completion on time, within budget and to a high standard of quality: Three days ahead of schedule, Dr. Dieter Birreck, Managing Director of OHB Digital Connect, handed over the symbolic key to the new UHF DAMA control station at the Hunsrück barracks in Kastellaun. The handover was to the SATCOMBw Stage 2 and Stage 3 project manager from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), and the Bundeswehr IT Services Command (KdoIT-SBw). Prior to the handover, the station underwent extensive testing to ensure it met all client-specified requirements for satellite communications.
The new control station replaces the previous one and features significantly more powerful technology. It provides capacity for German Armed Forces communications via secure, satellite-based radio systems. “We are proud to have completed the new UHF DAMA control station in Kastellaun within the estimated budget, and three days before the end of the agreed-upon project period,” said Dr. Birreck during his visit to Kastellaun. “This once again demonstrates our expertise in satellite communications.”
The contract covered the turnkey construction of the ground station and its integration into the German Armed Forces' communication networks. A similar project was successfully completed in 2019 with the construction of a new UHF DAMA control station in Gerolstein.
UHF (Ultra High Frequency) refers to electromagnetic waves in the 300 MHz to 3 GHz frequency range. DAMA (Demand Assigned Multiple Access) is a technology that allocates transmission and reception channels dynamically, ensuring optimal bandwidth use and reliable communication, even in remote areas. The UHF DAMA control station in Kastellaun is part of SATCOMBw, the German Armed Forces' satellite communication system, and serves as a key component in UHF troop communication."
